Clapham Greenway

Improved Pedestrian Route

I collaborated with Ade Architecture to create a concept for improving a pedestrian route through housing estates in Clapham. The route is currently confusing and very un-inviting.

This project aims to make the route welcoming and safer for residents and others walking through, giving priority to pedestrians over traffic as well as improving lighting and sign-posting along the route.

We also wanted to make it attractive and fun so we've collaborated with artists to create a continuous visual theme along the route as well as working with 'River of Flowers' to create a stream of bee friendly planting. The project has been approved at concept stage.

UNI PROJECT

Urban Green

Urban park design project

This project involved designing a series of connected public spaces in Leeds city centre.

My main focus was to reclaim land used by vehicles to create pedestrian-friendly spaces which would re-connect disused spaces and areas cut-off by heavy traffic.

I introduced features which would improve the economy of the area as well as improvements to the green infrastructure of Leeds.

The whole scheme aimed to create a new cultural and retail destination for residents and city centre users, access to the riverside and a pleasant green space which is currently lacking in the centre.

Fairhill Pavilion

Garden design project

Another project for Ade Architecture.

This project involved designing a small space around a proposed pavilion for a private garden in Tunbridge Wells, Kent.

As the pavilion was to be built slightly below ground level, the landscape around it includes terraced levels, leading gently down towards the entrance.

The slightly formal design and traditional English planting are in keeping with the main house and its grounds.

Dewsbury 2035

Masterplan and animation

I worked as a freelance animator and graphic designer for Bauman Lyons Architects.

This project is an urban design masterplan which aims to transform Dewsbury town centre over the next 25 years. Dewsbury is a small market town in Yorkshire, which suffers many problems, including segregation, low ecenomy, derelict buildings and a negative reputation. Yet it has the potential to be a thriving market town destination with great assets.

My role in the project was to work alongside architects, other artists and members of the public to help visualise the ideas in the form of a printed booklet and an animation. The animation was created to help explain these ideas to children.

I was involved throughout the whole project, including public consultations, brainstorming, development of the masterplan and production of the finished publications.

Woodhouse Community Centre Garden

Voluntary garden design project

Last year I volunteered as a garden designer for Woodhouse Community Centre in Leeds. The project was to transform an un-used piece of land into a welcoming and safe garden which could be enjoyed by centre users as well as the public.

I liaised with staff and centre users and created a design which aimed to incorporate their ideas. It includes features which enable people to plant fruit and vegetables, socialise and provides screening of traffic and ugly utility areas. Some artistic features also give the space and the centre itself a stronger identity. The garden is currently being installed. These photographs and designs show its progress.

UNI PROJECT

Armley Mills Museum and the Aire Valley

Urban analysis, masterplan and detailed design project

This project consisted of several stages, including:

  • Urban analysis of the Aire Valley, Leeds

  • Creating a vision and masterplan for the Aire Valley

  • Detailed design of the grounds of the Armley Mills Industrial Museum located on the River Aire.

The project aimed to attract more visitors to the museum and the areas adjacent to the river and canal. My designs aimed to highlight existing features by enhancing the general infrastructure

of the surrounding area and improving access to local heritage, leisure facilities and nature.

UNI PROJECT

Arts, Plants & the Environment

Landscape Art Project

This project allowed us to use our creativity to take inspiration from the local woodland to design a piece of landscape art in the city centre.

My inspiraton came during a particularly windy day in the woods, where I couldn't escape being battered by branches and hearing the loud whistling of the wind. I focused on experiencing wind through varying flexibility of plants and materials on a very windy city centre location in Leeds. I used animation to illustrate my ideas.
